Sunderland sealed Premier League safety with a 1-1 draw at Wolves, but Nordi Mukiele and Brian Brobbey endured injury scares. Régis Le Bris’ side steadied themselves after the heavy defeat by Nottingham Forest.
Sunderland Echo notes the point confirms safety and keeps a late push for the top half faintly alive.
Inside six minutes Mukiele left the field for hand treatment, returning 11 minutes later to head Sunderland in front from a Granit Xhaka corner.
Dan Ballard was dismissed on 24 minutes after VAR advised referee Paul Tierney to review an off the ball incident, the check concluding he had pulled an opponent’s hair. He is now likely to miss the final three games.
Wolves levelled from a 54th-minute corner, the third set-piece Sunderland have conceded in two matches. A possible foul on Sadiki was checked but VAR took no action, and Xhaka was booked soon after for dissent.
Brobbey went down clutching his leg on 64 minutes but continued before Le Bris introduced Habib Diarra, Dennis Cirkin and Wilson Isidor on 72, with Sadiki, Reinildo and Brobbey making way. The game finished 1-1 after both sides pushed without carving a winner.
It felt a chance missed, yet the organisation with 10 men was creditable. Sunderland now host Manchester United, travel to Everton, then welcome Chelsea on Wearside, with European hopes still just about alive.
