Two supporters from Norway and England struck up a friendship in Miami on Friday night, on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final at Hard Rock Stadium at 23:00 on Saturday.

According to L'Équipe, Trygue Lehne, 36, from Oslo, and Jack Bevington, 40, from Wolverhampton, met on Ocean Drive in stifling heat amid a friendly mix of fans. They had just ordered a second pint at the Barbizon Cafe.

Fluent in English and steeped in the Premier League, Trygue follows Viking and Manchester United, inspired by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s spell at Old Trafford from 1997 to 2007.

Jack keeps an eye on Norway because of the Premier League names, including David Möller Wolfe, Erling Haaland, Martin Ödegaard, Sander Berge and Oscar Bobb, and reckons they are quite a side. He vowed that if Norway beat England he would buy their shirt and back them for the rest of the tournament, and Trygue promised the reverse.

They compared the finishing of Haaland and Harry Kane, and shared a hope that neither Argentina nor France win the World Cup. The Englishman sees Messi’s team as arrogant, the Norwegian argues France’s forwards spend too much time going to ground.

The chat drifted into history, from the 1066 Battle of Stamford Bridge, won by Harold Godwinson over Harald Hardrada, to the 1911 race to the South Pole. Roald Amundsen planted Norway’s flag first, ahead of Britain’s Robert Falcon Scott, who died of cold and hunger on the return.

Both agreed Saturday’s meeting should be far less brutal, then ordered another beer as night finally fell over Ocean Drive.
