FLW's Norwich City fan pundit has given his verdict on a potential permanent move for Sam Field this summer

Norwich City narrowly missed out on a play-off place under Philippe Clement after he turned around the club’s season.

The Canaries were languishing in the relegation battle when he took charge in November, but a strong second half of the campaign brought them back into the top half of the table.

The Norfolk outfit finished ninth in the Championship, missing out on a play-off place by eight points.

A defeat to Hull City on the final day ended things on a sour note, with the Tigers sealing sixth place as a result.

Clement will now be preparing for the summer transfer window, as this will be his first pre-season in charge of the squad.

Decisions will need to be made on the players currently at his disposal before targets are drawn up, with the market set to open on 15 June.

Permanent Sam Field switch is welcome at Norwich

When asked about completing a permanent move for QPR loanee Sam Field, FLW’s Norwich fan pundit Zeke Downes claimed he wouldn’t be against the move at this stage.

He believes the midfielder provides a strong level of experience to the squad, and that he offers strength in depth to Clement for next season, suggesting he’d be open to a deal with the London outfit.

“I think he’s one that I would be happy to have,” Downes told Football League World.

“He’s got the experience in the league, he’s a good enough age where he’s not too old and I think a lot of the players around him can learn a lot from him.

“He’s played a lot of games in the Championship, and he played really well when we needed him, and he could be a really good squad option.

“So I think if we signed him, I wouldn’t be unhappy.

“I could see it happening, although with Topic coming back, that would be sort of five deeper midfield options, which isn’t a terrible thing to have.

“So I could see us offering him a deal, maybe a short-term one.”

Field made the switch to Carrow Road on a temporary basis in the final stages of the January transfer window.

The midfielder had fallen down the pecking order at QPR under Julien Stéphan, starting nine of his 18 league appearances in the first half of the campaign.

Field played 13 times for Norwich in the Championship, and helped the team rise back up the table.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the 28-year-old, who agreed to a new contract with the Hoops 12 months ago.

Stéphan’s future at QPR is currently up in the air, with the Frenchman recently being linked with a move back to Ligue 1.

That could play a role in determining the next step in Field’s career, with a permanent move to Norwich also potentially on the table.

Norwich finished ninth in the Championship table following their positive form under Clement, raising hope that the team could fight for promotion to the Premier League next season.

Meanwhile, Stéphan’s side fell to 15th, coming seven points behind Norwich following a difficult end to the campaign.

Sam Field move might be best for all parties

Field settled in well at Norwich, and played a part in their positive second half of the season, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the club sought a permanent deal.

If he isn’t guaranteed game time back at QPR in the next campaign, then perhaps a move away from Loftus Road would make sense.

This has the potential to be a deal that suits all parties, as it could allow Field to compete for more consistent minutes, while also offering QPR a fee that could be reinvested back into the team.

However, any decision on his future likely won’t be made for a number of weeks at this stage, and it will all depend on how much QPR would want for a permanent move.
