The Norwich star overcame early struggles to wow the Carrow Road crowd
A new era is in the early stages of dawning at Carrow Road, with Liam Manning preparing for his first season in charge of Norwich City.
The 39-year-old has added the likes of Jacob Wright, Jakov Medic, Harry Darling, Louie Moulden and Daniel Grimshaw to his ranks this summer, with excitement starting to build over what the 2025/26 campaign holds.
However, it’s not all good news in Norfolk, as it's becoming increasingly likely that forward Josh Sargent will exit the club in the coming months.
The USMNT striker has bagged 44 goals across the last three Championship campaigns, and has brought forward attention from multiple potential suitors as a result.
Football League World exclusively revealed recently that Scott Parker’s Burnley side were keen on securing the forward’s services, whilst the likes of Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Roma have all been linked.
However, times weren’t always this good at Carrow Road for Sargent.
In the summer of 2021, the Canaries forked out £8 million for a then-21-year-old Sargent as they looked to achieve Premier League survival.
The USMNT striker had scored 15 goals in 83 Werder Bremen appearances and was brimming with potential. However, the attacker struggled to get to grips with the English game.
Sargent scored just twice in his first 26 matches and was part of a Norwich side that suffered instant relegation to the Championship - he was often accomodated out wide as well and not in the central position that you would assume he was signed for.
Some were quick to slam the young forward, believing that he wouldn’t be able to make it for the Canaries after his struggles in England's top flight.
But, the Norfolk outfit stuck by him and have reaped the rewards ever since - albeit at a lower level than what he was signed at.
The following three seasons have seen Sargent emerge as one of the Championship’s deadliest operators, netting 44 times in that period.
Alongside Borja Sainz, the forward contributed to one of the division’s most devastating attacking units last term, and now could be set for a move that would result in clear career progression and perhaps another crack at the Premier League.
After three seasons of consistently strong performances, it seems like the time has finally come for Sargent to exit Carrow Road.
With so much interest from the Premier League and abroad, it would take a great deal of convincing to keep the USMNT international at the club, but Norwich could turn this situation into a positive one for the club.
The large number of outfits that are keen to sign Sargent should allow the Canaries to charge a huge fee for his services, which would massively soften the blow of losing the goalscorer.
As a result, Manning could reinvest the money from this sale back into his squad and raise the overall level of the group at Carrow Road.
Losing the 25-year-old would be tough for Norwich, but it might result in them standing a better chance of fighting higher up the Championship next term.
The ultimate ambition for the Canaries is to achieve promotion to the Premier League and Sargent’s sale could kickstart that.
