Leeds United full-back Sam Byram could be the perfect signing for Norwich City, with his former side lacking a bit of depth in that area at present.

Sam Byram has revealed that he would like to stay at Leeds United for at least another season, but with the full-back being out of contract this summer, his future still remains unclear.

He joined Leeds from Norwich City in 2023 and a return to his former club may be beneficial for the Canaries, given that they currently don't have much depth at left-back.

It is also unclear how much game time he would get personally in the Premier League, with Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe already stating that, "Every single penny of extra income would be ploughed straight back into the playing squad." Marathe also mentioned some of the finances that could be involved, describing them as, "Guaranteed media rights payments of more than” $133M for the team finishing bottom of the league."

With those figures involved, and new signings expected to be made, Byram's future at Leeds may be at risk.

Sam Byram would love to stay at Leeds United

With his contract expiring in the summer, Byram knows that his fate is out of his hands, but admitted that he wants to stay in an interview with The Athletic, in which he said, "We’ve been working as a team to achieve promotion. That’s been the key focus. I’ve not hidden my love for the club and I’d love to stay next year. They know that.

"Now we’ve achieved the final target, I’m sure they’ll speak as a team, investors, everyone, and make a plan for the future. Hopefully, I’m part of that, and, if not, I’ll watch on and always be a supporter."

Now, it is a case of whether he is offered a new contract, as he has made it very clear that he would be more than happy to stay should he get a new deal.

He joined Leeds from Norwich in the summer of 2023 and should he not end up staying on at Elland Road, a return to his former employers could be on the cards.

Byram made 54 appearances in four years for the East Anglia club, with his spell at Carrow Road being a pretty underwhelming one that was often hampered by injury.

They signed him in 2019 for £750,000 from Premier League rivals West Ham United, but he never really hit the ground running and didn't deliver on expectations.

Norwich did have some success when he was there, following up on their Premier League relegation in his first season by going straight back up and winning the Championship in the 2020/21 season.

They were then relegated in their first season back and have been in the second tier since then.

Despite his lack of impact on the pitch, all three of the managers that coached him liked what they saw from him.

One of the managers that he played under at City was current Leeds boss Daniel Farke, who brought him to Elland Road following the expiry of his contract at Carrow Road.

Norwich should be keeping an eye on Sam Byram's contract situation at Leeds United

Byram is a full-back, but where he differs from a lot of players is that he can play on both the left and the right-hand sides, which would be perfect for the Canaries given their lack of depth, especially on the left.

This season, their options at left-back have been limited, with no real nailed-on starter in the position over the course of the season.

Kenny McLean has been deployed there recently, but he is predominantly a midfielder, while Jack Stacey and a few youngsters have had stints in the position at times.

Consistency is often key in building a competitive team and chopping and changing a position across the course of the season doesn't tend to work.

Signing Byram would bring an experienced head in who can play left-back week in, week out and give Norwich some of that consistency that they have been missing.

If his contract isn't renewed, then he would be available for a free transfer, which could prove to be a shrewd bit of business.

While it is still unclear who the next manager will be, whoever they are could do a lot worse than to bring Sam Byram back to Carrow Road.
