There’s a viral video going around from Chelsea’s defeat on Wednesday night which shows the Blues’ subs warming up in a line. The point of it is that, looking along the row of faces, you don’t see anyone who inspires you with confidence they’re going to come on and win you a Champions League knockout game.
That’s in stark contrast to PSG’s start studded squad. Despite Chelsea’s record breaking spending, they have ended up with a group that is still miles away from top teams like the Parisians.
The guys on the London is Blue podcast put it perfectly:
“Chelsea took off Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer and brought on Romeo Lavia and Liam Delap,” presenter Nick Verlaney said.
“Liam Delap is a far cry from being a Champions League striker. He’s not even a Premier League striker right now. PSG brought on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. He’s an incredible player.
“You look at the overall quality of the squad, for the amount of money that [the sporting directors] paid for all these guys. And it’s simply not good enough.”
You can see them discuss the contrast in the video embedded here:
Chelsea’s team to face Newcastle tomorrow is going to be weaker than expected after a late ban for a Blues regular.
Liam Rosenior decided to defend his decision to not make changes in the PSG game until after the 80th minute. We’re not sure we agree with his logic.
