Arsenal wonderkid achieves a huge milestone during Premier League win over Everton

Mikel Arteta hailed Max Dowman for producing one of the best moments the Emirates Stadium has seen, as he declared: "It is just not normal."

Arsenal looked like being held to a goalless draw by Everton as normal time ticked away and the visitors continued to prove stubborn opposition.

But Dowman, who had been thrown on with 15 minutes, delivered the cross that led to Viktor Gyokeres opening scoring in the 89th minute, and the 16-year-old then ran through after Jordan Pickford went up for a corner to finish into an empty net.

That finish, after he skipped past two defenders, made him the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history and even his manager struggled to comprehend the impact Dowman had in the 2-0 win.

"I think he changed the game," Arteta said.

"Every time he got the ball, he made things happen. It looked like we were more of a threat. To do that at that age, in this context, with this pressure, it is just not normal.

He added: "It ended up in a manner that probably none of us expected. And it was one of the best moments that we lived together at the Emirates."

Dowman missed three months of the season with an ankle injury but he wasted little time in making an impact again back in the first-team.

Arteta had other options, including Gabriel Jesus, to bring on in search of a late winner, but it was Dowman who he placed his trust in.

"Probably in my head I had a gut feeling," Arteta said.

"Yesterday he was training in the last few days and I had a gut feeling that it was a moment for him. Probably because he doesn't seem to be fazed by the occasion or the moment or the context or the opponent.

"He just plays so naturally. He makes decisions to make things happen and what he delivered was incredible."

After Gyokeres broke the deadlock, Arsenal still had six minutes of stoppage-time to survive.

Everton won a corner at the end of those and Pickford was called up by David Moyes, leaving Arsenal with a chance on the counter.

The ball was headed out and Dowman seized the moment, leaving one defender on the floor and another trailing in the distance.

"For me, it felt like 45 seconds," Arteta said of Dowman's run.

"And I think it was really special because you could sense that it was ‘oooh building up, building up' and you see there's no goalie there. 'It's going to happen, it's going to happen'.

"Everybody was lifting, it was incredible. It was so loud, so energetic. What a moment."
