Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate could end up signing a new deal at Anfield in the summer, despite seemingly evaluating a departure for much of the season. The France international has been consistenly linked with Real Madrid, but so far, they have not made a decisive move.

The Reds attempted to renew Konate’s contract in early 2025, but were put off negotiations by a non-committal Konate. Around the same time, talk began that Real Madrid were interested in the defender on a free transfer this summer. However in November, Los Blancos informed Liverpool that they were not pursuing Konate.

Konate open to renewing Liverpool contract

In the latest update on his future, Fabrizio Romano has told Caught Offside that Konate is now open to renewing his contract Anfield. Romano goes on to explain that Liverpool are expected to renew contacts with his agent during the month of April.

‘Nothing concrete in Real Madrid interest’

Despite the news in November, after Dayot Upamecano renewed his contract with Bayern Munich in February, links to Konate started up again. The 26-year-old has been consistently cited as a potential option for Real Madrid in the summer, alongside Nico Schlotterbeck and Jacobo Ramon. The Italian transfer expert goes on to say that while Konate cannot be ruled out as an option for Los Blancos this summer as they continue to search for a central defender, there is ‘nothing concrete’ in Real Madrid’s interest in him.

Lack of clarity on Real Madrid plans

Upamecano was the primary target for Real Madrid, who currently have Dean Huijsen, Raul Asencio and Eder Militao under contract for next season. Antonio Rudiger is expected to be offered a one-year extension, but David Alaba will be allowed to leave at the end of the season. Generally, Real Madrid tend not to take decisive decisions on their squad planning before May, but there is no obvious candidate to be the fifth centre-back next season.
