Nottingham Forest are close to signing Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, with a short-term deal at the City Ground worth in the region of £500k under discussion, according to NY Times.
The move could be completed on Saturday, but Ortega would not be registered in time to face Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Forest want competition and cover for Matz Sels, with Brazilian goalkeeper John Victor expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Ortega’s City contract expires this summer. He turned down offers in the summer and no longer travels to every game. He has not made a Premier League appearance this season, last featuring at last year’s Club World Cup, and he has not been in a league matchday squad since 16 August against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which was before Donnarumma arrived.
The 33-year-old made nine appearances as City won the 2023-2024 title, including the final-day victory over West Ham United. Pep Guardiola has previously described him as among the best goalkeepers he has seen. Ortega has fallen further down the pecking order following the summer arrivals of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain and James Trafford from Burnley.
