Nottingham Forest have signed midfielder Xaver Schlager on a two-year deal, their first addition of the summer and the first under head coach Oliver Glasner. According to Nottingham Post, the 28-year-old arrives after leaving RB Leipzig when his contract expired at the end of last season.
The Austria international played at this summer’s World Cup. He spent four seasons with Leipzig and served as vice-captain during 2025/26.
Schlager previously worked with Glasner at Wolfsburg and described the move as an honour and a new challenge at a historic club. He highlighted Forest’s double European Cup triumphs under Brian Clough and said he is pleased to reunite with Glasner.
He said the club’s ambitions match his own and that he wants to return to European competitions. Playing during the week on the continental stage is, he said, the best feeling, and he pledged to give everything for the team and supporters.
Before Leipzig, the midfielder was on the books at Red Bull Salzburg and featured for Liefering.
Forest chief football officer George Syrianos said Schlager brings leadership and top-level European experience and that there is confidence he can make an immediate impact. He added that Schlager’s previous spell with Glasner at Wolfsburg should help his integration as he and his family settle in Nottingham.
