According to Voetbal Krant, Nottingham Forest are pushing hard to sign Arne Engels and have submitted a first formal offer. Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has also discussed the possibility of the midfielder moving on this summer.

Forest targeted the 22-year-old in January, seeing bids of £14m and £17m rejected before an offer worth up to £25m was also turned down late in the window.

“I would imagine so, yeah. At this minute I don’t think anything has happened.” He told The Scottish Sun.

“Where it carries on up towards the end of the window then suddenly something happens you’re not ready because it’s happening too late. All those bids Nottingham Forest made came in on the 11th hour so that was just a non-goer for us at that particular stage.”

“Then he got injured just after that. So if some things can happen a bit earlier then maybe there’s some resignation on my part there too.”

The Belgian outlet adds that the chance of an exit is growing by the minute, with Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham monitoring the player. It says an agreement on his future is expected this week, and that his Celtic stay is virtually certain to end despite two years left on his deal.

Engels joined Celtic from Augsburg two years ago for £11m. Forest are yet to make a signing this summer, and replacing Elliot Anderson after his £116m move to Manchester City is a priority for new head coach Oliver Glasner.
