Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a major setback in the relegation fight, with Xavi Simons ruled out for the rest of the season after a knee injury in the 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The player said in a post that the news felt cruel, his season had ended abruptly and the World Cup was now out of reach. He pledged to support his team and spoke of leaning on faith, resilience and belief as he works back.

Nottingham Forest stretched their unbeaten run to eight in all competitions with a 5-0 win at Sunderland on Friday, briefly moving eight points clear of 18th-placed Spurs. The gap returned to five after Tottenham’s win, and West Ham’s 2-1 success over Everton kept them 17th, three points behind Forest and two ahead of Spurs.

Simons, 23, injured his right knee in the 58th minute after a collision with Hugo Bueno. He tried to continue but went down again in front of medical staff and left Molineux on a stretcher.

Spurs have already lost Cristian Romero and Mohammed Kudus to season-ending injuries. They visit Aston Villa on Sunday.

Forest still face Chelsea, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Bournemouth. Head coach Vitor Pereira is balancing survival with a two-legged Europa League semi-final against Villa, and he is without Callum Hudson-Odoi, with Murillo likely to miss Thursday’s first leg and concern over Jair Cunha.
