Novak Djokovic has joined a group of sporting stars backing Le Mans FC through Brazilian fund Outfield, and he appears increasingly engaged with the club. The hierarchy hope to welcome him to Stade Marie-Marvingt before the end of the season.
On the eighth of March, during Indian Wells and moments after booking a third-round place at the Masters 1000, the 38-year-old highlighted Le Mans' 3-0 home win over Annecy on Instagram, sharing the dressing-room war cry with “Allez” and three emojis. L'Équipe notes that president Thierry Gomez hopes to gather the investor quartet at Marie-Marvingt this season and says Djokovic is passionate about football and follows their matches.
Djokovic forms a quartet of investors alongside former Formula One drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The group has put money into Outfield, which is set to become Le Mans' majority shareholder.
His involvement is linked to ties with WTA world number one Aryna Sabalenka's camp. Her partner, Brazilian entrepreneur Georgios Frangulis, founder of Oakberry, has also invested in Outfield.
Wearing a Le Mans scarf, Massa, who follows almost every game, took the ceremonial kick-off against Laval on the seventh of February, a match that finished 1-1. Djokovic was unavailable for that date, having been engaged the previous day as an airline ambassador during the Milan-Cortina Olympics ceremony.
