Nuñez and Agirrezabala, contrasting fortunes at Valencia | OneFootball

Unai Nuñez and Julen Agirrezabala have endured contrasting spells at Valencia, who visit San Mamés on Sunday at 16.15 needing a win to secure safety while Athletic pursue Europe.

According to El Correo, Carlos Corberán’s side are three points above the drop and have taken four of the last 15 available.

Agirrezabala, 25, joined on loan last summer with a €10 million option that now appears unlikely. He started as first choice, shipped a 6-0 at Barcelona, then excelled in a 2-0 win over Athletic.

A January hamstring setback was followed by a left-knee injury that required surgery on 5 March. He has missed 18 games, is back with the group and is unlikely to face Athletic, with Dimitrievski established.

If Valencia do not buy, he would return to Athletic. With Unai Simón entrenched, another move, loan or sale, could follow, and his deal runs to 2027.

Nuñez is available and likely to start against his former club. It will be his third visit since 2022, the previous two with Celta ended 2-1 and 4-3.

Signed in January after a stint at Hellas Verona, the Celta-owned centre-back has made nine appearances. He suffered a hamstring issue on 6 April but is now fit, and despite Pepelu’s emergency stint he could reclaim his place.

Both players are on loan and their continuity at Valencia is uncertain.
