West Ham United head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has called on his side to keep improving to aid their bid of climbing the Premier League table.

The Hammers claimed their first league win since beating Espirito Santo’s old club Nottingham Forest 3-0 at the end of August, after defeating Newcastle 3-1 at the London Stadium last weekend.

Victory, Espirito Santo’s first since taking over from Graham Potter, took them to 18th in the Premier League, three points behind 17th placed Burnley, whom they play host to this weekend.

Espirito Santo was pleased by his side’s reaction to falling behind against Newcastle, but has called on further improvements if they are going to get themselves out of danger.

“We had to realise we can be punished, but you have to react,” Espirito Santo said. “Even when you concede, we had had a really nice move with hitting the bar. The reaction to going behind was positive.

“As I see it, it was the best thing that happened to us. We reacted well to adversity. We competed well, but in football the process is never over. There’s a squad for us to use – as long as they are healthy we have solutions.

“It’s a new game, so what was proven against Newcastle is dead. We have to give a lot, so the fans give us more. It was beautiful on Sunday, but we need them again. It’s going to be a totally different match, against a totally different team. Burnley have a lot of heart, and it’s going to be a challenge.

“Sunday was good, but Saturday is another challenge. We’re going to face a very good team, and we’re going to have to compete well. We have to keep raising our standards.

“The table now is not a reference for us. We know we’re in a tough situation, but we know if we keep improving and performing that will take care of itself.”
