Nuno Mendes was forced off with an apparent thigh problem during Portugal’s last-16 meeting with Spain in Arlington, on the outskirts of Dallas, on Monday. The Paris Saint-Germain left-back, 24, departed in the 56th minute.

According to L'Équipe, he had been engaged in a fierce duel with Lamine Yamal from the outset and frequently had the upper hand.

After another burst of pace, his thigh seemed to give way, prompting the substitution. He was replaced by Nelson Semedo.

Mendes has started every game of the competition. His early exit is a blow for Portugal, and potentially for PSG.

The run of matches may be taking its toll, as he arrives off a high-level season with PSG that was repeatedly disrupted by fitness problems.
