New York City FC just celebrated their tenth anniversary in Major League Soccer. Between celebratory events and the win over Orlando City SC, the past week has been an incredible one. There is clearly still work to do, but the Pigeons have a 1-1-1 record, which is an acceptable one to start the season under a new head coach, Pascal Jansen.
Of course, there are other stories to cover. So, here is the next NYCFC news roundup that includes the latest update on Nick Cushing.
Former NYCFC Head Coach Nick Cushing has a new job. At least, he does for now. And it is back at his old stomping grounds, too.
The Englishman is taking over Manchester City Women's Football Club after the WSL side sacked their head coach, Gareth Taylor. It is temporary, for he will lead the team for the rest of the season. It is somewhat shocking since Manchester was in fourth place in the standings. Plus, the team has the Women's League Cup finals this weekend.
It will be interesting to see how Cushing does with Manchester. He might have been unsuccessful with NYCFC, but he was a great coach for the WSL team.
On Monday, MLS announced the Team of the Matchday. Jonathan Shore, who had a fantastic first start for NYCFC, made the bench of the Team of the Matchday.
This is a great accomplishment for the young midfielder. He was vital to the team's win and might be the replacement for James Sands. He is different with how he plays, but similar to Sands, Shore was impactful in the defensive midfield. He was also unafraid to move into the attack, enhancing his versatility.
After all, he is predominantly a central midfielder who can even play on the wings when needed. However, if Shore continues to prove that he can help the team defensively, then the defensive midfield is where Jansen must play him.
On Saturday, NYCFC will play against the New England Revolution. The game will be the anniversary of the team's first home opener, in which the Boys in Blue won 2-0. And, they played against the Revolution!
As such, the club will continue the anniversary celebrations during the second home match of the season. Fans can even get discounted tickets for $20.15 to celebrate ten years in MLS.
It is unknown whether there will be any special pregame events, so NYCFC supporters will have to wait and see.
