It’s not often we see academy players dominate at international level like this, but Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni both played key roles as England Under-19s thrashed Portugal 6-0, even if the wider outcome was frustrating.

Despite the emphatic win, England were denied qualification for the UEFA U19 EURO 2026, which adds a strange edge to what was otherwise a hugely encouraging night for our young players.
According to EnglandFootball.com, the Young Lions produced a “fantastic performance” but ultimately fell short due to results elsewhere in the group.
The report stated: “England under-19s were denied a place at UEFA U19 EURO 2026 despite a comfortable 6-0 win over Portugal.”
Within that performance, Ngumoha was one of the standout attacking threats, constantly looking to drive at defenders and create openings.
The 17-year-old winger didn’t get on the scoresheet, but his intent was clear, with the official report noting: “Rio Ngumoha was next in line to try and advance England’s lead, but the tricky winger saw his effort blocked by the Portuguese defence.”
That kind of involvement reflects exactly what we’ve already seen from him at club level, and why people like Gary Lineker have been praising him so vocally.
Alongside him, Nyoni delivered a composed performance in midfield before being withdrawn in the second half, showing once again why he’s trusted in these high-level youth fixtures.
The England lineup confirmed both Liverpool players started the match, underlining how important they are becoming within this age group setup.
While Ngumoha provided the spark in forward areas, the midfielder’s role was more about control and balance, helping England dominate possession and dictate the tempo throughout the game.
This follows on naturally from the other performance earlier this week where both youngsters were involved in a controlled victory, showing consistency in their development rather than just flashes of quality.
There’s still frustration that such a dominant display didn’t result in qualification, but from our perspective the bigger takeaway is clear.
We’ve got two young players gaining serious international experience, contributing to high-level performances, and showing they can handle responsibility, which, heading into a crucial end to the season, can only be a positive for the club’s future.
