Köln confirmed that they signed Felipe Chavez in an initial loan deal from FC Bayern. Lukas Kwasniok’s side will also have an “option to buy” at the end of the season if all things go well. Bayern will have a buyback clause if he joins Köln permanently.
The central midfielder played his first two Bundesliga games in January after his impressive performance in Bayern’s only warm-up game for the second half of the season. The 18-year-old registered a goal and an assist in the second-half of the 5-0 win over RB Salzburg.
"The goal is to gradually introduce him to Bundesliga level and give him the foundation to establish himself there permanently," said Köln's managing director Thomas Kessler in the signing ceremony.
Chávez was born in Bavaria and he could also have represented France’s national team, but he made his decision to play for Peru last October. He joined Bayern’s youth setup at age 12 from FC Augsburg. Köln’s only other January transfer was also on a loan deal as Jahmai Simpson-Pusey joined them from Manchester City.
