Eintracht Frankfurt have officially completed the signing of Nigerian international Raphael Onyedika from Belgian champions Club Brugge. 

The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga outfit valid until 2031. Sport Bild reports that Frankfurt are paying an initial fee of approximately €9m, with bonuses capable of taking the total package to €10m.

Club Brugge are also understood to have secured a five-percent share of any future transfer fee. Onyedika’s long-term contract reportedly contains no release clause.

Frankfurt had pursued the midfielder across several transfer windows before reaching a verbal agreement with Onyedika in late July. The Bundesliga club subsequently improved its offer to approximately €9m amid attempted intervention from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.

The Nigerian eventually opted for Frankfurt and travelled to Germany to complete his medical after Brugge accepted the proposal.

The RheinMainAdler secured their preferred defensive-midfield target for significantly less than his estimated €23m market value. Onyedika’s previous Brugge contract was due to expire next summer, leaving the Belgian club with reduced negotiating leverage.

Onyedika and Aséko to form Frankfurt’s new midfield core

Onyedika becomes Frankfurt’s second major defensive-midfield addition of the summer following the €13m signing of Noël Aséko from Bayern Munich. Both players are under contract through 2031 and are expected to form the foundation of a redesigned midfield.

Approximately €22m has now been invested in the pair as Frankfurt attempt to address one of last season’s clearest problem areas. The Eagles conceded 86 combined goals across the Bundesliga and Champions League.

Frankfurt’s defensive deterioration became particularly pronounced after the winter break. The club conceded three goals in five consecutive matches to begin 2026, with a 1-3 home defeat to Hoffenheim extending the disastrous sequence.

Onyedika should provide the power, protection, and positional discipline Frankfurt regularly lacked. The robust midfielder offers a strong physical presence, ball-winning ability, and considerable experience in high-pressure European fixtures.

Further midfield departures are now likely. Ellyes Skhiri was among four Frankfurt players granted permission to negotiate transfers before the club’s training camp. A proposed return to former club Köln has subsequently fallen off the table.

Farès Chaïbi also faces an uncertain future, while Hugo Larsson has attracted transfer interest. 

Onyedika experienced despite first top-five-league move

Onyedika moved from Nigeria to Europe in 2019 and established himself professionally with FC Midtjylland. After making 37 Danish league appearances and gaining experience in continental competition, he joined Club Brugge for approximately €9.5m in 2022.

The Nigerian immediately became an important player in Belgium. He made 95 regular-season league appearances and another 30 in the championship round, helping Brugge win the Belgian title in 2024.

Onyedika also accumulated 24 Champions League appearances, five Europa League outings, and 13 Conference League matches. He has earned 26 senior caps for Nigeria and helped his country finish third at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

His move to Frankfurt represents his first opportunity in one of Europe’s top five leagues, although the Eagles will not participate in continental competition during the coming season after finishing eighth in the Bundesliga.

The absence of European football may allow Frankfurt additional time to integrate their revamped midfield. Both the club’s extensive midseason tactical problems and the difficulty of using Larsson as a largely unsupported holding midfielder demonstrated the need for specialist reinforcement.

For Frankfurt, Onyedika’s arrival represents a major coup. The club has acquired a long-standing priority target for substantially below his assessed market value, while the Nigerian now receives the opportunity to become a central figure in the next phase of Eintracht’s squad rebuild.

“Raphael Onyedika impresses us not only with his physicality and strategic understanding of the game, but above all with his exceptional consistency,” Eintracht Board Member for Sport Markus Krösche noted in the club’s official announcement.

“In recent years, he has been a regular starter and has won numerous titles in Belgium,” Krösche continued. “In addition, he has valuable international experience. At 25 years old, he still has great potential for development and is, at the same time, an important building block for the structure of our squad.”
