Italian club Atalanta have confirmed the appointment of former Manchester United football director John Murtough as their new director of global development.

An official Atalanta statement read, “Atalanta BC are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. John Murthogh as Director of Global Development within the Club’s Sports Department, effective immediately.”

“The 54-year-old English executive, who will report directly to Sporting Director Tony D’Amico, will play a pivotal role in enhancing the Club’s international strategy and vision.”

“This appointment marks Mr. Murtough’s first professional experience in Italy, following a distinguished career in England where he held various senior executive roles. His notable previous positions include roles at Everton, Fulham, Coventry City, Everton again, the FA Premier League, and Manchester United.”

“The Percassi and Pagliuca families, together with the entire Club, extend a warm welcome to Mr Murtough and wish him every success in his new role within Atalanta BC’s Sports Department.”

Murtough parted ways with United in April 2024 after almost 11 years in a number of roles.

He was initially concerned with the academy and scouting before being promoted to head of football development in 2016.

Five years later, Murtough was elevated to the powerful position of football director, essentially giving him oversight over the men’s, women’s and academy operations.

He played a key role in the appointment of Erik ten Hag and also drove a number of recruitment decisions.

Murtough would have been involved in negotiations with Atalanta during deals for Amad and Rasmus Hojlund.

Atalanta currently sit third in Serie A with 71 points, trailing league leaders Inter Milan by 10 points and second-placed Napoli by seven.

The Bergamo club’s decision to appoint Murtough in this capacity marks another significant step in their efforts to establish themselves as a truly global brand.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Thursday when they host Lyon for the return leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.
