In an interview with the Swiss website Blick, ex-Borussia Dortmund and Mönchengladbach head coach Lucien Favre has announced his retirement as a head coach.

On the decision to bring to an end his 33 years as a head coach, where he has coached in his native Switzerland, Germany and France, Favre said:

“I made the decision a while ago…I’ve always been busy. Now I’m 68, it’s gone by quickly. I’ve almost forgotten my age because I’ve always been busy, always occupied. It’s good for me the way it is,” the Swiss coach continued.”

Favre has been without a job for over two years following his departure as Nice’s head coach back in 2023. The Swiss was linked with a return to his former club Gladbach since he left his role in the South of France.

Favre’s legacy at Dortmund and Gladbach:

The 68-year-old’s first steps in German football were with Hertha Berlin. In the Haupstadt, he led them to an unlikely Champions League place in 2009.

However, at Gladbach is where Favre is best known. The head coach took over at a club sitting at the bottom of the Bundesliga midway through the 2010/11 season and managed to lead them to safety after a win against Bochum in the relegation playoff.

After rescuing them from relegation, Favre then took die Fohlen elf to the Champions League and was able to nurture players such as Marco Reus, Marc-André ter Stegen and Granit Xhaka during his time at Borussia Park.

Then at Dortmund, he led the club to within touching distance of the Bundesliga title in 2018/19, but they would fall short after a late-season collapse. While at the Signal Iduna Park, Favre coached the likes of Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland and gave a debut to Jude Bellingham
