After months of talks and speculations, it is finally official. Frenkie de Jong has signed a new contract with Barcelona, committing to the club until the summer of 2029.
“Frenkie de Jong will continue to wear the Blaugrana jersey for a long time to come. This Wednesday, the final signing of the new contract that will keep the midfielder with FC Barcelona until 2029 took place,” the club statement read.
“The player, along with president Joan Laporta, confirmed his continued presence at a ceremony held at the club’s headquarters.”
De Jong’s previous contract stood to expire at the end of the ongoing season and talks over an extension have been going on for a long time now.
Issues with his former agent, Ali Dursun, slowed down the process a great deal, but once the midfielder changed representation, everything moved forward much more smoothly.
De Jong always wished to continue at Barcelona, and considering his importance in Hansi Flick’s setup, the Catalans too were intent on retaining him.
As such, an agreement was finally reached over a three-year extension that will keep the Dutchman at the club until 2029.
As part of his new deal, De Jong will accept a salary reduction, although he will stay on his current wages until 2026, when his new contract will kick in. His release clause will rise to €500 million from €400 million.
