Gary O’Neil has left RC Strasbourg Alsace to succeed Kieran McKenna as manager of newly-promoted Ipswich Town, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

McKenna, having got Ipswich Town promoted back to the Premier League, announced that he would leave the club in order to take a break from football. It left the club in search of a successor and O’Neil was identified as the priority target.

The Englishman only joined Strasbourg back in January, following the departure of Liam Rosenior, who joined fellow BlueCo-owned club Chelsea. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth manager enjoyed a strong start at the Meinau, however, form tailed off towards the end of the campaign.

Le Racing, by the end of the season, gave up on their chances of qualifying for European competition via their league finish, deciding instead to focus on cup competitions. However, Strasbourg were knocked out at the semi-final stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League and the Coupe de France.

O’Neil now leaves the club. He is joined at Portman Road by Tim Jenkins, Neil Critchley, and Ed Ames.
