Lens have signed Roma goalkeeper Mathew Ryan (32), both clubs have announced. The former Brighton and Hove Albion and Arsenal goalie has put pen to paper over a six-month deal with Will Still’s Artois side. The Ligue 1 side were in the market for a goalkeeper following Brice Samba’s shock €14m switch to Ligue 1 rivals Stade Rennais. Lens previously agreed to a loan deal for Marseille goalkeeper Pau Lopez, but Lens walked out of the deal after Girona refused to part ways with the Spaniard.
Lens then considered a move for Bayern Munich’s Daniel Peretz and eventually set their sights on Ryan. The Australia international goalkeeper was looking to join a team for which he will be the undisputed starter between the sticks. Ryan was Mile Svilar’s understudy at Roma and only featured once this season in the Coppa d’Italia. Ryan was out of contract next June. Ryan will wear the No. 30 jersey for Lens and is in line to make his Ligue 1 debut this Sunday at home against Angers.
