Following his latest injury setback, Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy has undergone surgery earlier today, the club confirmed in an official statement.

“Our player Ferland Mendy underwent successful surgery today, under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services, for an injury to the rectus femoris muscle of his right leg,” the statement read.

“Mendy will begin his recovery work in the coming days.”

Mendy is understood to have been operated by Dr Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet in Lyon, France. It is the same doctor who had treated Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe earlier this season when he was dealing with a troublesome knee injury.

Mendy sustained the rectus femoris tendon injury a little over a week ago, during Real Madrid’s La Liga game against RCD Espanyol.

Reports emerged soon after suggesting that the 30-year-old left-back, who has a contract with Real Madrid until 2028, might be out for as long as a year.

It was even suggested that given the nature of his injury and the lengthy period out on the sidelines, Mendy was even considering retirement.

Those reports were soon dismissed though and now, post-surgery, journalist Arancha Rodriguez confirms that the left-back will be sidelined for a period of 5-6 months.

It would mean that Mendy will miss a good part of the first half of the new season and depending on the pace of his recovery, might not even play in 2026.
