Four years after their relegation, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard are back in the second tier of French football. A 2-2 draw with Le Puy 43 Auvergne on Friday assured them a place in the second tier for the first time since 2022-23.
That season, they finished ninth in the table but were relegated for violating administrative rules. The two-time Ligue 2 champions are now a season away from top-flight football, something they have not featured in since their relegation in 2013-14.
Vincent Hognon’s men wound up second in the Championnat National, three points above FC Rouen, with the latter earning a place in the playoffs. A few years ago, Sochaux were close to earning a spot back in Ligue 1. They finished fifth in the Ligue 2 table in 2021-22, earning the last playoff spot.
After coming from behind to upset Paris FC 2-1, they were narrowly beaten by AJ Auxerre on penalties in the semi-final match. AJA wound up getting promoted that season. Previously, Sochaux had won two top-flight titles in the 1930s.
