Werder Bremen have officially completed the capture of Leeds fullback Isaac Schmidt on loan. The thrice-capped Swiss international heads to the Hanseaten of the upcoming Bundesliga season. As reported earlier, Bremen have secured a purchase option in the €3m range as part of the deal.
Schmidt becomes the second right back Bremen have signed away from the Isle this week. Southampton’s Yukinari Sugawara will also work with Werder on loan this year. The Japanese international has already expressed his enthusiasm to help the struggling top flight club.
“We had been keeping an eye on Isaac for a long time and know him from his time at FC St. Gallen,” Werder personnel chief Peter Niemeyer noted in a club statement. “We are delighted to have finalized the loan deal. He will strengthen our squad with his qualities and flexibility.“
“Isaac is tactically well-trained and brings pace and dynamism to the team,” Werder head coach Horst Steffen added. “He will immediately be integrated fully into training and will add a lot to our team.”
“Werder is a big club,” Schmidt himself added. “I also love German football and the Bundesliga. Good football is played here and the fans are great. I also know that Werder and the coach who joined this season play good football.”
