VfL Wolfsburg have officially sealed the reported on loan deal for Olympique Lyon’s Saël Kumbedi. Kicker reports that Kumbedi’s Ligue 1 outfit have secured a €1m loan fee as part of the package. Additionally, there is a €6m purchase clause included. The clause is reported to be an automatic one triggered by undefined performance metrics.

Wolfsburg continue to be linked with a whole plethora of other players as the summer transfer window draws to a close. It very much looks to be the case that the 20-year-old will not be the last player to be unveiled this weekend in the Lower Saxon Autostadt. No fewer than four players are being targeted in the final weekend of the window.

Kumbedi has already amassed a lot of experience (52 Ligue 1 appearances despite his age, but is likely intended to serve as a backup option for starting right back Kilian Fischer. The fact that Fischer had no one to compete against in training camp may nevertheless lead to the younger getting some minutes.

“We were specifically looking for a young, dynamic right-back with experience and developmental potential,” VfL sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz noted at Kumbedi’s official unveiling. “Saël also fits perfectly into the team with his mentality. We are very happy that he will be wearing the VfL jersey in the future.“

“The move to the Bundesliga is a great challenge for me,” Kumbedi himself added at his presentation. “I’m looking forward to meeting lots of new faces and contributing my qualities to VfL. Wolfsburg gave me a very good feeling from the very first conversation.”
