Borussia Dortmund have officially confirmed the reported on contract extension for back-up keeper Alexander Meyer. The 34-year-old hasn’t featured in competitive play yet this season, but has been rewarded for the rimes in which he successfully stepped in for regular No. 1 Gregor Kobel. Meyer has featured 17 times in the Bundesliga, seven times in the Champions League, and once in the domestic cup for BVB over the past three seasons. 

Widely regarded ass a keeper quick on his feet and ideally suited for teams that favor the short passing game out of the back, Meyer remains a solid back-up worthy of retaining. Dortmund made that clear in their public statements accompanying the announcement. Meyer’s contract was due to expire next summer. His new working papers will keep him with BVB an additional year. 

“We are delighted that Alex will continue to be part of Borussia Dortmund,” BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl noted in a club statement. “He is an absolute asset to our team. Not only because he is a very good goalkeeper, but also because he has a great personality. In recent years, Alex has proven that he can always be relied upon.“

“Dortmund now feels like home to me,” the player himself noted. “Over the past three and a half years, I have experienced many special moments with the club, for which I am very grateful. The discussions with the club management were characterized by mutual trust and great appreciation. It means a lot to me to continue to be part of Borussia Dortmund.”
