Werder Bremen striker Victor Boniface’s season-ending knee surgery has finally been officially confirmed. The Nigerian international will not appear for his Bremen again, where he was on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. Werder confirmed that Boniface will go under the knife today in a statement published on the club’s website. 

Last week, Werder denied reports that a decision had already been made in the matter of Boniface. It nevertheless remained apparent to most that the 25-year-old’s visit to an expert sports surgeon in Innsbruck, Austria would invariably lead to this result. 

Boniface’s Werder Bremen chapter ends in spectacular failure

Boniface never ended up scoring a goal for his Bundesliga loan club. The striker’s chaotic tenure with the Hanseatic city state club found itself exclusively characterized by Boniface’s strange off-pitch antics. On the pitch, Werder head coach Horst Steffen noted that Boniface was often as confused, incoherent, and discombobulated as his social media posts. 

“Due to the lengthy rehabilitation process, we no longer expect Victor to play for us this season,” Werder Bremen Peter Niemeyer noted in a club statement. “We saw [Boniface’s loan] as an opportunity with certain risks involved. In the final analysis, we must admit that we hoped for much more from this loan that didn’t work out the way we envisioned.”

Boniface joins a long list of Werder Bremen flops from recent years. On is reminded especially of the case of Guinean international and former Liverpool man Naby Keïta. Boniface and Keïta count as two of the Bundesliga’s biggest transfer flops in recent years. 

The Hanseaten now prepare to try another way of reviving their fledgling attack. Stuttgart striker Jovan Milosevic – after recently proving himself in Serbia – is set for a Werder medical this weekend. The 20-year-old will also join Werder on loan.
