Before heading off to Morocco with Senegal for AFCON 2025, Moussa Niakhaté is already assessing OL’s mid-season performance.
Back on the Ligue 1 starting grid after their administrative relegation was overturned on appeal by the DNCG, Olympique Lyonnais kicked off this season with a low-budget squad. That didn’t stop them from delivering an impressive first half of the campaign, finishing in 5th place in the standings. According to Senegalese centre-back Moussa Niakhaté, this lines up perfectly with the club’s targets.
"We’re right where we wanted to be, and honestly, where a lot of people didn’t think we’d end up. We trusted ourselves, we made a fantastic start to the season, kept clean sheets, and were top of the table. There was a bit of a slump, but that’s normal given how young our squad is. In some matches, our inexperience showed—we lacked composure, we didn’t always make the smartest decisions. Still, there are so many positives to take from this first half of the season, and a wealth of learning experiences," the Senegalese international said in the mixed zone after yesterday’s win over Le Havre (1-0).
