Aingeru Olabarrieta heads into pre-season needing to reassert himself at Athletic after a mixed year on loan at Andorra in Segunda.
As reported by as.com, the Spain Under-19 winger made 29 appearances and scored once, but saw his minutes shrink after Ibai Gómez left the Andorra dugout.
He had not started a league game for seven months, playing only 25 minutes across his previous nine outings, before starting on Sunday at Burgos’ El Plantío.
A product of Lezama since Alevín C, he jumped straight from the Juvenil de Honor to the reserves, skipping Basconia. Two seasons ago he featured three times for the first team, twice in La Liga against Sevilla and Alavés and once in the Europa League against Manchester United.
In May 2025 he made his first start for Athletic against Alavés. He has described his game as built on taking on defenders, driving at goal and cutting in from the right. He will reunite with 2005 cohort team-mate Peio Canales at Lezama.
New German manager Edin Terzic will assess him at the start of pre-season, although at 20 another Segunda loan would be the logical next step amid fierce competition from the Williams, Nico Serrano, Navarro and Berenguer. He is under contract until June 2029.
