Olise: Between World-Class and Local League Level—Bayern Star Faces Criticism | OneFootball

Michael Olise is currently one of the best soccer players in the world. Two goals, one assist, and a stellar performance in the 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt: On the field, there’s hardly anything to criticize about the Bayern star right now. Off the field, however, the 24-year-old is increasingly sparking debate.

After being named “Man of the Match,” Olise had to sit down for a mandatory interview with DAZN. Reporter Jochen Stutzky asked the Frenchman how it felt to score such spectacular goals. His response: “I don’t know.”

Even when pressed, he didn’t offer much more. Olise made it clear once again that interviews aren’t among his favorite pastimes.

Many Bayern fans love exactly that. On social media, Olise’s demonstrative nonchalance has long been part of his image. “Mister Nonchalant” prefers to let his feet do the talking and makes no secret of his aversion to public appearances.

That can be entertaining. But there’s a limit. Criticism of Olise’s demeanor is growing.

Olise doesn’t have to become an entertainer

No one should expect Olise to suddenly become the next Thomas Müller at the microphone. Every player has his own personality. Some enjoy the spotlight; others want to disappear as quickly as possible after the final whistle.

Olise himself once described his personality very aptly: “I’m not a super-emotional person. I don’t react the way everyone else does.”

That should be respected. At the same time, communicating with fans and the media is now part of a professional soccer player’s job—especially at a club like FC Bayern and even more so for a player of Olise’s stature.

The interview after the Bodø game wasn’t about uncomfortable contract questions, transfer rumors, or other sensitive topics. Olise was simply asked to talk about an extraordinary night of soccer in which he himself was the standout player with two goals and an assist.

In situations like this, one can expect a superstar to at least show a certain degree of interest in the person he’s speaking with. Being taciturn is perfectly legitimate. Letting an interview peter out pointedly, on the other hand, can quickly come across as disrespectful.

Yet other insights show that Olise is by no means the reserved loner he sometimes appears to be in public.

Olise can also be the “great communicator”

Jonathan Tah recently painted a completely different picture in an interview with L’Équipe. “He’s the leader of our WhatsApp group,” the Bayern defender revealed. Olise gets along with everyone and is “the team’s top communicator.”

The Frenchman also came across as much more talkative during the 2026 World Cup on the TV network CBS Sports. In an interview with Highsnobiety, he even spoke in greater detail about personal interests such as chess, fashion, table tennis, and cricket.

So it’s clearly not that Olise can’t communicate. He simply chooses not to in certain situations.

This is exactly where the 24-year-old needs to find the right balance. His laid-back demeanor is part of who he is and actually makes him even more interesting to many fans. No one wants to turn him into a polished media pro who recites the same rehearsed lines after every game.

But “Mr. Nonchalant” only works as long as his coolness doesn’t turn into demonstrative disdain.

Olise doesn’t have to love interviews. Nor does he have to deliver monologues that go on for minutes. A few sincere answers after a world-class performance certainly wouldn’t hurt his unique image. On the contrary.
