Manchester United are searching for their next permanent manager after parting ways with Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils have already appointed Michael Carrick as caretaker manager earlier this week, and the Englishman is set to remain in charge until the end of this season.

The Premier League giants are currently seventh in the league table after 21 games, three points behind third-placed Liverpool. Carrick will be expected to push for a top-four finish, which could help attract top talents this summer, when United are likely to invest heavily in the squad.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, will continue the search for their next permanent manager, with several candidates already being linked with the job. One man who has been heavily touted for the hot seat at the Theatre of Dreams in recent times is Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner.

Proven in the Premier League

Glasner took charge of Crystal Palace in February 2024 following Roy Hodgson’s departure, and went on to transform the club’s fortunes. The Austrian helped the Eagles secure 49 points in the 2023/24 campaign, their highest points tally in the Premier League era, by winning six of their final seven league games.

Last season, Glasner made history by helping Palace win the FA Cup, and register a club-record 53 points in the league. He enjoyed a tremendous start to the current season as well, winning the Community Shield by defeating Liverpool 3-2 on penalties.

Glasner’s proven record in the Premier League and Palace’s transformation under his stewardship have reportedly caught United’s attention. The Austrian’s future has been subject to speculation for a while, especially since his contract expires at the end of this season. He has now provided an update on the situation.

Glasner set to leave this summer

Speaking to the press, as cited by the BBC, Glasner confirmed that he will leave Selhurst Park at the end of this season. He said: “A decision has already been taken, months ago. I had a meeting with Steve [Parish] in October, the international break.”

“We had a very long talk, and I told him I will not sign a new contract. We agreed at the time it was the best to keep it between us. It’s the best that we could do that and keep it confidential for three months.”

“But now it’s important to have clarity, and we had a very busy schedule so that’s why we didn’t want to talk about it. Steve and I want the best for Crystal Palace.”

Glasner went on to add that he is simply looking for a new challenge and insisted that he has not spoken to any suitors so far. He said: “I’m just looking for a new challenge.”

“I haven’t spoken to any other club, I told the players that and promised them today I will give my best to give the best season in Crystal Palace history, the best points tally in history. We are now four points better off than we were at this stage of the season and we will do everything to bring another trophy back to Selhurst Park.”

Final Thoughts

Oliver Glasner has deployed a back three to great effect at Selhurst Park, which is perhaps why he has long been linked as a potential successor to Amorim. According to a recent report relayed by The Peoples Person, the Austrian has already been informed that he is on United’s shortlist for the permanent job, a factor that may have influenced his decision to leave.

Glasner was previously compared to Jurgen Klopp during his stint with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he won the Europa League. As such, he could be a compelling option for the permanent role at Old Trafford.
