Olympique de Marseille said in a statement on Saturday that Medhi Benatia will leave at the end of the season, stepping down on Monday, the day after the final match.

The club praised his wholehearted commitment and focus on upholding Marseille’s ambitions, highlighting his part in last season’s second-place finish as well as work on recruitment and the academy’s reorganisation. Owner Frank McCourt thanked him for seeing out the campaign after he had announced his exit on nine February, when Roberto De Zerbi left his post as head coach.

Benatia returned in late 2023 as sporting adviser and was promoted to director of football at the start of 2025.

He came through Marseille’s academy in the early 2000s, is 39, capped by Morocco, and previously played as a centre-back for Juventus.

His departure had already been flagged in mid-February during Pablo Longoria’s demotion. His aim was to serve a club that means a great deal to him, and he wished success to the team, the city and the supporters.
