According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland defender Omar Alderete is a major doubt for Paraguay against Germany on Monday after a World Cup knee scare, though scans suggest no significant damage.

The 29-year-old sustained the issue in the 0-0 draw with Australia last week, a result that sealed Paraguay’s place in the last 32 after a heavy opening defeat to the USA.

The muscle strain persists and he trained away from the group in their final session. Head coach Gustavo Alfaro said they would test him on matchday, that he remains in pain despite clear checks, and that they will wait until the last moment.

Paraguay v Germany kicks off at 9.30pm UK time, live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Sunderland’s World Cup cohort have enjoyed a hugely successful tournament, with Wilson Isidor the only player out after the groups. He signed off with a long-range goal in Haiti’s final game against Morocco.

Chemsdine Talbi’s Morocco face Netherlands and Sunderland trio Brian Brobbey, Lutsharel Geertruida and Robin Roefs on Monday (2pm KO UK time). Simon Adingra’s Ivory Coast play Norway on Tuesday (6pm KO UK time), then Nilson Angulo’s Ecuador meet Mexico early Wednesday. That winner will face either England or DR Congo, with Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku playing Thomas Tuchel’s side on Wednesday (5pm KO). Habib Diarra is set to be involved as Senegal face Belgium on Wednesday (9pm KO), before Granit Xhaka’s Switzerland meet Algeria early Friday.
