Granit Xhaka hit a Swiss landmark as Omar Alderete endured a heavy defeat, with Chemsdine Talbi and Wilson Isidor also featuring at the World Cup.
According to Sunderland Echo, four Sunderland players were involved over the weekend.
Xhaka captained Switzerland against Qatar, Breel Embolo’s first-half penalty put them ahead, but Boualem Khoukhi equalised deep into stoppage time after missed chances. The midfielder collected his 147th cap and, alongside Ricardo Rodriguez, set a national record with a 13th major tournament appearance. Switzerland face Bosnia and Herzegovina next.
Talbi made his World Cup bow as Morocco drew 1-1 with Brazil, introduced in the second half to help see out a point. Ismael Saibari opened the scoring, then Brazil levelled before the break through Vinicius Jr’s moment of quality.
Isidor started for Haiti in a 1-0 loss to Scotland, playing 76 minutes. John McGinn’s deflected strike on 28 minutes decided it, and Frantzdy Pierrot headed wide five minutes from time. Haiti meet Brazil next Saturday, kick-off 1.30am BST.
Alderete completed 90 minutes as Paraguay were beaten 4-1 by co-hosts the United States in Los Angeles. Damian Bobadilla’s own goal was followed by two from Folarin Balogun either side of half-time, Mauricio replied after the interval, before Sunderland-born Gio Reyna scored late on. Paraguay play Türkiye next in Group D.
