Lothar Matthäus has given FC Bayern a concrete transfer tip for the summer – and brought a prominent name into play. Xaver Schlager from RB Leipzig will not be renewing his contract and is therefore on the market on a free transfer. For Matthäus, the Austrian international would be a highly interesting option for Munich
The record international sees the 28-year-old as the right profile to fill a potential gap in midfield. Background: Leon Goretzka will leave the club after the season. Matthäus is talking up Schlager as a potential successor
Schlager has stood for dynamism, intensity and strong tackling in central midfield for years. According to Matthäus, it is precisely these attributes that could be good for FC Bayern. The Austrian brings experience from the Bundesliga and international experience – and would also be an economically attractive package due to his contract situation
Especially in a summer in which Bayern have to manage several construction sites, a transfer on a free transfer could create additional financial flexibility. Schlager would not require a long acclimatization period and could immediately represent a reliable alternative in an already strong midfield

Matthäus indirectly refers to an example from the recent past. Bayern have already signed Konrad Laimer, a top performer from Leipzig – also with an Austrian passport. The international has established himself in Munich and is now a permanent fixture in the rotation under Vincent Kompany
It remains to be seen whether Schlager could follow a similar path, but one thing is clear: his profile would basically fit the requirement profile – especially if Goretzka actually leaves the club
The decision now rests with Max Eberl and the sporting management. Whether Bayern go for the transfer-free midfielder or look elsewhere is likely to be one of the most exciting questions of the coming transfer period.
