One more win to make history on the final day

Champions League football has been confirmed and third place secured – but the Red Bulls haven't taken their foot off the gas just yet. When they travel to Freiburg on the Bundesliga's final day, this RBL team are looking to make sure they go down in the history books.

One last assignment

The celebrations after our 2-1 win over St. Pauli had not yet died down when Ole Werner emphasised he was still looking towards the next match. Our head coach noted that we have one more task ahead of us in Freiburg on the final day.

"I don't think it should be taken for granted to have achieved our aim of Champions League qualification with a game to spare; to be able to say that we're guaranteed third place and can still set a new points record. That's our aim for the final match."

That is exactly what's on the line for Leipzig on matchday 34. A win in Freiburg would see RBL reach the 68-point mark. The Red Bulls have never picked up more in the Bundesliga. The current record is 67 points, achieved in our debut season of 2016/17 – a campaign that still holds a special place in our club's history.

Marcel Schäfer also made clear just how eager he was for the team to surpass this record total. Our managing director for sport said: "I'd really, really like us to achieve that. I'm very keen for us to eclipse our record points tally."

Young, fearless and aiming for yet another record

Surpassing our highest points total is the main target, but it's not the only record that could fall in Freiburg. RBL have already equalled their highest number of wins in a Bundesliga season, with 20. A victory in Freiburg would be our 21st – more than in any previous campaign.

This total is even more special when we consider the journey behind it. A major rebuild began at Cottaweg in the summer, with a new-look squad, changes of roles and fresh faces – as well as the youngest average age in the Bundesliga at just 23.7 years. This team had to come together, grow together and overcome setbacks together. That makes the fact that they still sit in third ahead of the final day, are back in the Champions League and are chasing a new points record even more impressive.

Marcel Schäfer described Leipzig's approach earlier in the season: "We sign young players and help them reach their highest level of performance. That's our way and our philosophy."

Now, RBL can see this philosophy bear fruit in the best Bundesliga season in the club's history.

Back in the Champions League as a unit

The reaction after our final home game of the season showed just how much this philosophy means both internally and among the supporters. David Raum took the microphone, spoke to the fans and summarised the prevailing feeling after securing Champions League qualification: "We had a very, very important objective. We've achieved it together."

Goalscorer Xaver Schlager was also very matter-of-fact after the 2-1 victory: "The most important thing is that we won today." This statement encapsulates not only that match but the Bundesliga season as a whole. Not everything came easily and not every win was spectacular, but this team often found a way to get the three points.

Aiming to make history in Freiburg

Of course, it won't be an easy task in Freiburg. SC Freiburg are traditionally strong at home, play with intensity and never stop running. A win on the final day will need to be earned.

But that's why a victory would sum up our season. A record points total doesn't come easily. A historic season will need us to be on it from start to finish.

For RBL, the game in Freiburg is about more than just fulfilling our final fixture. It's a chance to end an excellent Bundesliga season on a historic note. Third place is secured. Champions League football is secured. Our record number of wins has been equalled. Our points record is still one victory away.

One win, 68 points, 21 victories.

It would not just be a great way to wrap up the current season. It would set a new benchmark.
