FC Bayern took a big step towards the German championship with a 5-0 win over FC St. Pauli and could possibly clinch their first title of the season as early as next weekend
Bayern now have a twelve-point lead over their closest rivals Borussia Dortmund, who suffered a home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen this afternoon. Conversely, this means that if Munich win at home against VfB Stuttgart on matchday 30, they would secure their 35th German championship
But FCB would not only be champions early with a win. In general, Vincent Kompany’s team needs to pick up one more point than Borussia Dortmund. So if BVB lose at TSG Hoffenheim next Saturday, a draw against Stuttgart on Sunday would be enough for Munich
With their 5-0 win over St. Pauli on Saturday evening, Bayern increased their goal tally for the season to 105, breaking a Bundesliga record that had stood for over 50 years. However, Munich will not be setting a record this year for the fastest championship in history. This was achieved by a Bayern team under Pep Guardiola in the 2013/14 season, when they were already crowned champions after the 27th matchday
However, they could still equal another Bundesliga record they set themselves this season. The 91 points collected by Jupp Heynckes‘ treble-winning team in the 2012/13 season are still a record today – and still achievable this year
Bayern currently stand on 76 points after 29 match days, and if they win each of their five remaining games, they would collect a further 15 points and equal the record season from 13 years ago.
