A familiar failing cost Everton on Saturday as they couldn’t score against Bournemouth at Dean Court, leading to their eighth Premier League defeat of the season.
The Toffees had the worst scoring record among top-flight teams across 2024 (not including the promoted or relegated sides) and have only scored 15 in 19 games this term. Only Southampton (12) have scored fewer.
Their defensive record has kept them above water; they’ve conceded just 25 goals and Jordan Pickford has seven clean sheets to his name, the second-most in the Premier League.
As impressive as that is, it’s clear they need to improve in attack, but Sean Dyche points out that finding a solution to that particular problem will not come cheaply.
“A really tight game,” the Everton boss told BBC Match of the Day. “First half we were not at the races and I made some changes. I thought we had a stronger performance second half, and asked some questions.
“Taking our chances has been a challenge since I’ve been at the club, it still is and was today in those key areas where people are trying to pass it rather than shoot.
“You look at the goalscoring records before I was here, it’s been an ongoing challenge. I don’t know whether you’ve noticed but the players to do that cost a lot of money.
“You have to develop a way of playing but equally it comes down to individuals when the moment of truth comes.”
Everton’s issues up front were not helped during the 1-0 loss to Bournemouth as Armando Broja picked up an injury when he connected with the turf when trying to kick the ball.
“We’ll have to wait and see on Armando,” said Dyche. “He’s caught the floor as he’s gone to shoot and twisted himself. Jesper Lindstrom picked up a knock as well.”
