FC Barcelona are on the verge of confirming the opponent for this year’s Joan Gamper Trophy, with Egyptian giants Al Ahly set to face the La Liga champions at the Spotify Camp Nou on August 19.

Indeed, according to SPORT, an agreement between the two clubs has already been reached in principle, and only the signing of the final documents remains before the fixture can be officially announced.

A relationship strengthened by Hamza Abdelkarim transfer

Al Ahly’s selection is closely linked to the strong relationship established between the two clubs during the transfer of Hamza Abdelkarim last winter.

The 18-year-old striker initially joined Barcelona’s academy on loan and impressed enough during his first months in Spain for the club to activate the purchase option.

The Catalans ultimately paid €1.5 million, with a further €5 million in potential performance-related bonuses included in the agreement.

That successful transfer helped strengthen ties between the clubs and played an important role in Al Ahly emerging as Barcelona’s preferred opponent for the traditional preseason fixture.

Opportunity for growth in Africa

From a sporting perspective, Al Ahly represent one of the strongest and most successful clubs on the African continent.

The Egyptian giants boasts an extraordinary record, having won 45 league titles, 39 Egyptian Cups, and 12 CAF Champions League trophies, making them one of the most decorated clubs in world football.

Their pedigree ensures Barcelona will face a competitive opponent before the start of the new season.

Beyond football, the fixture also carries commercial significance. Egypt, with a population of more than 120 million, is the most populous Arab nation, making it an increasingly important market for Barcelona’s international growth strategy.

Hosting one of the country’s biggest sporting institutions offers another opportunity for the club to strengthen its global presence and connect with supporters across North Africa and the Middle East.

Other options considered

Before settling on Al Ahly, Barcelona explored several alternative opponents. Borussia Dortmund, AS Roma, RB Leipzig, Napoli, Ajax, and Cruz Azul were all considered at different stages of the process.

However, the scheduled date of August 19 significantly limited the availability of many top European clubs. As a result, Al Ahly became the preferred solution, combining sporting quality with commercial value.

With only the final signature still pending, Barcelona is expected to officially confirm the fixture in the coming days.
