Oriol Romeu close to Saints return | OneFootball

Free agent Oriol Romeu could be set for a surprise return to Southampton according to reports.

The Spanish midfielder joined the Saints in the summer of 2015 after a loan spell at Stuttgart from Chelsea.

Romeu went on to feature 255 times for Southampton in all competitions, scoring eight times and being a part of the club's 2016/17 Europa League campaign.

After leaving St Mary's Stadium for Girona in the summer of 2022, Romeu went on to return to former club Barcelona before spending last season back on loan at Girona.

According to the Southern Daily Echo, a deal has now been agreed for the player's return pending a medical and the usual formalities.

Romeu's return would be a boost to the Saints who sacked manager Will Still at the weekend after a poor run of results.
