Oscar Bobb believes his recent move from Manchester City to Fulham offers him the perfect platform to establish himself in the Premier League.
In January, the 22-year-old attacker completed a £27 million transfer from Manchester City to Fulham, which could turn out to be one of the season’s most intriguing deals.
Bobb is the most recent graduate from City’s prestigious academy pipeline to pursue consistent senior football elsewhere, following in the footsteps of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Liam Delap, Romeo Lavia and James McAtee.
Fulham’s growth under Marco Silva has turned out to be crucial in engineering the transfer. Since returning to the Premier League, the Cottagers have grown steadily and now hope to compete for European football.
Bobb saw the move as both an opportunity and a strategic step toward establishing himself as a regular starter. “I wouldn’t say I was desperate to move,” Bobb said in a recent interview with Mail Sport.
“I had some fitness issues but then they (Manchester City) also made some signings and there was a big squad there in the end. Both parties agreed if the right club came, it would be fair for me to move.
“When Fulham came in and I spoke to Marco Silva, I felt like that was the right thing. It was very appealing. I spoke to the manager at City and the sporting director – and they were brilliant; they understood.”
“It’s a stable club. That was very important for me, to come to a place where I felt like I could be in a protected environment and grow as a player.”
Bobb went on to cite how witnessing fellow City academy graduate Palmer undergo make a big move to Chelsea in 2023 gave him belief to leave his boyhood club.
“It’s different for every player,” the Norway international added. “Cole going to Chelsea, I remember during that saga, I was with him for it and they saw him becoming what he’s become.
“A lot of people from the outside maybe didn’t think it would go that quick, but when a club comes in for you and has a plan for you, if your visions align, then that’s the most important part.
It’s important to be in the right place breaking out but with Cole, there was never any question of him being able to do what he’s done.”
Since the Abu Dhabi takeover of the club in 2008, Manchester City have established one of the most prestigious academies in world football.
Bobb considers that the fact that several players from his generation have secured regular roles in top-flight football away from the Etihad Stadium illustrates both the quality of the players and how important it is to find the right opportunity for their development.
The forward added: “It’s so funny because you get these people coming into the academies telling stories about how only one from every age group, maybe gets playing time at Premier League or Championship level. From my age group, there are eight or nine playing at that level.”
Now fully fit and eager for regular football, the winger sees Fulham as the ideal environment to develop. Silva’s tactical system, which is built around quick attacking movement and intense pressing, should give Bobb opportunities to play in a number of offensive positions.
“I’m sure we can achieve great things,” he added. “We have great depth and quality – we can definitely push for Europe. I want to become an important player for the club.
“I want to play in every game; I’ve not had that in my career so that’s a big goal – and I want to leave my mark on games, score more goals, which I think I can do.”
The move to Fulham is another chapter in Bobb’s career that has already faced different types of challenges and has seen both good and adverse times. If he can turn his potential into consistent performances in the Premier League, leaving Manchester City may turn out to be an important turning point in his evolution.
