Corinthians president Osmar Stabile says talks with Talleres over the Garro debt have moved forward and could be wrapped up soon. “Estamos trabalhando. (A conversa) evoluiu bastante e acredito que o mais breve possível, talvez na semana que vem, a gente está com o assunto encerrado”, he told Central do Timão.
The clubs have resumed negotiations over a Fifa ruling of 3.6 million dollars, about R$ 18.7 million at present, with the total potentially reaching R$ 32 million due to bank charges. Corinthians still have an appeal pending at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Talks had stalled amid strained relations between former president Augusto Melo and Talleres’ hierarchy. Earlier this week, CNN Esportes reported the boards reached a pre-agreement and that Talleres asked CAS to pause the case for 15 days as a goodwill gesture, setting a window for Corinthians to pay the first instalment and avoid a new transfer ban.
A shift in approach from the current board has helped unlock dialogue. Stabile travelled to Argentina to meet Andrés Fassi, a visit well received in Córdoba and seen as rebuilding trust towards a definitive settlement.
Stabile has formed a restructuring group at Parque São Jorge that helped clear debts to Santos Laguna for Félix Torres, which ended a Fifa transfer ban, and also worked on the Matías Rojas case. Recently, at Talleres’ request, Corinthians sent three payment proposals, and internally the board view the renewed talks positively after the initial resistance linked to past tensions.
