Manchester United suffered a 2-1 defeat to 10-man Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
The hosts were presented with the game’s first chance as Sandro Tonali had his sights on goal from range, but his effort flew well over the bar.
At the other end, Benjamin Sesko and Bruno Fernandes teed up to play Matheus Cunha through on goal, but the Brazilian skied his effort.
In the quarter of an hour, the Magpies could’ve taken the lead after Anthony Gordon found Harvey Barnes with a lovely backheel pass, but the Englishman sent his effort wide of the right post.
On the stroke of halftime, Bryan Mbeumo squandered a glorious opportunity to fire United ahead after Aaron Ramsdale parried Cunha’s effort to his path, and the Cameroonian blazed his effort well over from 10 yards out.
Minutes later, Jacob Ramsey was given a second yellow card and sent off for diving in the penalty area, and the hosts were reduced to 10 men.
In the sixth minute of first-half additional time, Newcastle were awarded a penalty after Gordon went down under the challenge of Fernandes. The Englishman stepped up for the spot-kick and sent Senne Lammens the wrong way.
Three minutes later, United drew level after Casemiro met Fernandes’ delivery from a free-kick.
Shortly after the restart, Gordon saw his left-footed strike from inside the area comfortably gathered by Lammens.
In the 74th minute, Leny Yoro thought he had headed the Red Devils in front when he met Fernandes’ inviting cross, only to be denied by Ramsdale before he comfortably collected Fernandes’ effort minutes later.
United continued to push for a late winner with the one-man advantage and almost got it on the stroke of full-time after Joshua Zirkzee tried his luck from range, but his effort was palmed away brilliantly by Ramsdale.
However, the Magpies eventually got the winner minutes later via William Osula after he got onto Kieran Trippier’s long pass, wriggled his way into the United box and found the bottom corner with a beauty.
The result condemns Michael Carrick to his first league defeat back at Man United, but the Red Devils remain third in the Premier League standings given that Aston Villa also suffered a defeat to Chelsea.
