Otamendi leaves giant legacy at Benfica as numbers stand out | OneFootball

Otamendi has brought his Benfica career to a close after six seasons, bowing out with standout numbers and silverware.

According to Glorioso 1904, the Argentina international arrived from Manchester City in 2020 for 15 million euros and swiftly became central to the dressing room. Jorge Jesus handed him the captaincy within months, a debated call that soon proved right.

At his unveiling he promised to defend Benfica to the death. From a debut against Farense in October 2020 to a final outing versus Estoril, he made 281 appearances, ranking among the most used players in Portuguese football across the past six seasons.

He logged more than 25,000 minutes and maintained a striking availability. Of those 281 matches, only in 11 did he not see out the 90 minutes.

Otamendi departs with four trophies, one league title, the Taça da Liga and two Supertaças Cândido de Oliveira. After six influential years at the Luz, the centre-back leaves as one of the most important figures of Benfica’s recent era.
