OUR WORLD CUP HISTORY

AC Milan players have written some of the most memorable chapters in the history of the FIFA World Cup finals and knockout rounds (from the round of 16 to the final). The Rossoneri hold some unique records: AC Milan remains the only Italian club to have had a player score in a World Cup Final before 1982, and can also claim the highest goal tally at Qatar 2022 among players from Serie A. That historic goal came from Nils Liedholm at the 1958 World Cup with SwedenIl Barone opened the scoring in the Final against Brazil with a brilliant solo move, becoming the first AC Milan player to score in a World Cup Final. He still holds the record as the oldest goalscorer in a World Cup Final, at 35 years and 264 days. The goalscoring record, meanwhile, belongs to Olivier Giroud, who netted four goals in total at Qatar 2022, including the decisive strike in the quarter-finals to eliminate England in a 2-1 victory.

Rossoneri players have also left their mark in some of the most iconic World Cup semi-finals. Karl-Heinz Schnellinger scored the dramatic 92nd-minute equaliser to make it 1-1 against Italy in the Mexico 1970 semi-final, the legendary "Game of the Century", in which Gianni Rivera also found the net. Patrick Kluivert, still with AC Milan at the time, headed home an 87th-minute equaliser to make it 1-1 against Brazil in the France 1998 semi-final, taking the match to penalties. More recently, Theo Hernández opened the scoring in the semi-final against Morocco with an acrobatic half-volley in the opening minutes, helping France reach the final in Qatar in 2022. Other former Rossoneri goalscorers in World Cup history include Florin Răducioiu, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Filippo Inzaghi, Ronaldo and Kaká.
