Enzo Maresca must have been a relieved man in his press conference tonight, after 2 wins in ten his side got an easy win at home over Southampton to add 3 crucial points to their total as the race for the top 4 ticks another week towards completion.
Speaking after the game, he made the point that despite the noise about his team’s struggles, and despite the poor results, they’re still right up there:
“I just said to the players. We are in our worst moment, in terms of results,” Maresca said.
“But we are fourth. One point from third. And we are in our worst moment. So that means a lot, and shows how good we were in the first part of the season. Now it’s just a matter of trying to finish in the best way.”

His point is, of course, that despite being on a stinking run only broken by playing a historically bad team, we’re still in a good position in the table and more than in the fight for the top four. Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth have started falling away, and even Arsenal are within reach as their own strikerless struggles continue.
You really won’t have to be an amazing team to make the top 5 this season, and that will likely be enough for Champions League football. What we need is consistency to turn this one win into a few – and what better way to do that than to play Leicester, who may only be marginally better than Southampton.
Two games in the Conference League plus that juicy game against the Foxes might allow us to make this 4 wins in a row, and then we’ll really have some momentum.
